Joining Reddish Vale Golf Club
Reddish Vale is a traditional members’ golf club. The club is run by a committee of club members who are nominated by the members. Within the club we have a gentleman’s section, a ladies section, and also a Senior and a Junior section. Each section has an appointed Captain and each play their own schedule of competitions.
Here are a few details about who you can expect to find at the club, and what you could expect to find taking place on the golf course during a typical week:
52 weeks a year, Saturday is club member’s competition day. During the summer months, we play a series of handicap qualifying competitions from the white tees. These are usually individual in format, and include our traditional ‘major’ or ‘board’ competitions, that have been played for decades. Around 120 members take part each week, which is an ideal amount as there is never a need to ballot for tee times, and all members who wish to play do so.
The winter golf programme consists mainly of team games, and finishes with a ‘Pro’s Cross Country’ at the end of March, which is always great fun and played over a different course each year.
Sunday is a very sociable day at the club. Things get started early when the morning ‘school’ of golfers (which are usually 20 or so strong), meet at 7.30 ready to throw the balls up. Anyone who wishes to play can just turn up and is guaranteed a game. The morning school welcomes and encourages participation from anyone, and you should be home in time to keep everybody happy!
For those who don’t fancy the 7.30 start, there is a second school who throw the balls up at 11.00.
The Pro’s competition is also played every Sunday. The format is full handicap stableford, it is played from the yellow tees and club members can roll up and enter on the day.
This is usually a quiet day at the club, and an ideal time for a sociable game. We have a dinner-time ‘school’ that plays every week day. All members are welcome to turn up and play in the school any day of the week. Members’ and members’ guests only time is from 12.30 until 1.30 Monday to Friday.
The scratch team sometimes play their matches on a Monday evening, and the ladies occasionally play their inter club matches on a Monday.
Tuesday is senior’s day and we have a very active, well supported and well run seniors section. You need to be a minimum of 55 years old to join the seniors section. Like most seniors sections, they like to play early and they have normally all teed off by about half past nine. Lots of Tuesdays they play sociable golf, although they also play a series of both summer and winter competitions. The seniors also play an annual senior knock out, they have excellent away days at other clubs and enjoy participating in lots of inter club matches. This thriving section is great to become a part of, and they are very keen to welcome in new members.
The juniors section plays a weekly competition on Tuesdays during the summer holidays, these count towards the overall ‘Junior order of merit’.
We have a flourishing Wednesday section that enjoys weekly competitions throughout the golf season. We alternate between medal and stableford, all competitions being handicap qualifiers, played from the white tees and all contribute to the ‘golfer of the year’ prize at the end of the season. This gives the opportunity for all 5 and 6 day members to achieve and maintain an official CONGU club handicap. Entries on a Wednesday are taken on a roll up basis, and at any time of the day, so if you wish to begin your round at 6.00 in the evening that is fine!
Wednesday competitions continue throughout the winter months, and are run by The Professional as stableford competitions from the yellow tees.
Thursday is ladies day. The ladies play their competitions in the morning and have always teed off by 10.00. The ladies are keen to recruit new lady golfers, and there are always a couple of ladies ready to mentor new players around the course. The Lady Captain chooses a venue for their away day each year and joining in with their many competitions is always an exciting and friendly experience.
This is members’ social golf day, and we can rely on a strong dinner-time school, dependent of course upon the weather.
